18 Apr Innovative Wastewater Treatment Transforms Protein Processing Wastewater into Valuable Resources
Managing Complex Wastewater in Protein Processing Plants
Wastewater from poultry, red meat, pork, and fish processing plants contains a complex mix of organic matter, nutrients, pathogens, fats, oils, and grease (FOG). The selection of appropriate equipment and purification methods is crucial to handle each type of wastewater effectively, whether the goal is the reuse of water within processing facilities or safe discharge into the water system or environment, meeting South African regulatory standards.
Maximising Value through Product Recovery
Protein processing wastewater, despite its challenges, also presents opportunities for valuable product recovery. Components like fats, proteins, and essential nutrients are often discarded due to their perceived low commercial value, resulting in economic loss for processors. Instead of treating these as waste, we assist processors with implementing wastewater treatment systems which allow for the isolating and recovery of these valuable products, which can offset treatment costs.
The Wastewater Treatment Process:
A typical Colubris wastewater treatment system involves multiple stages, depending on the desired outcome:

- Preliminary Treatment: Coarse solids are initially removed using screens or sedimentation tanks.
- Non-Chemical Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF): A non-chemical DAF system is used to separate fats and oils from the wastewater stream.
- Chemical Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF): Chemical DAF systems are employed to further separate proteins and finer solids. Coagulants and flocculants are added to aggregate and separate the solids effectively.
- Biological Treatment: Microorganisms are employed to break down organic pollutants. This can occur through aerobic or anaerobic processes.
- Advanced Treatment Techniques: Membrane filtration such as reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection techniques are used, enhancing water quality and ensuring the removal of pathogens and residual contaminants.
Modular Solutions
Our protein wastewater treatment systems feature a modular design, allowing for both complete systems and single-equipment solutions. For instance, when treating poultry processing wastewater, you can begin with a modular setup including a screen and non-chemical DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation). This modular approach enables easy expansion with additional equipment based on discharge requirements and available finances.
Addressing Water Scarcity in South Africa
Water scarcity in South Africa is a major concern. Effective wastewater treatment is crucial for sustainable water management, particularly in protein processing plants. By 2030, the country’s water demand is expected to surpass supply by 17%, emphasising the urgent need for sustainable water practices.
