35 Years Strong: Celebrating DFS Process Solutions in Southern Africa (1991–2026)

The Southern African food processing industry has evolved significantly over the past three decades. Success within the sector requires resilience, adaptability and a deep understanding of the practical conditions processors face daily.

Since 1991, DFS has partnered with processors to navigate these challenges. Originally established as DAS Food Systems, the company has grown from a small Cape Town operation into a regional firm, with a second office in Centurion, Gauteng. As the business marks 35 years in 2026, the completion of 3,345 projects across Southern Africa reflects a shared history of service and trust, alongside sustained growth and a long-term commitment to the local industry.

A Foundation in Reliable Freezing

In the early 1990s, DFS began with specialised spiral freezers engineered for reliable, high-throughput performance. Those early projects established essential trust with local processors and led to a measured expansion into primary poultry and fish processing. During that decade, the company built a strong reputation within the protein sector by focusing on robust equipment capable of handling the pressures of local production lines.

Expanding Across the Processing Value Chain

In the 2000s, DFS grew in step with its customers’ expanding operations. A pivotal moment occurred when the company became the representative for LINCO (now BAADER Poultry), significantly strengthening its position in primary poultry processing.

As customer requirements became more sophisticated, the company extended its support across the full processing value chain. This included the introduction of brine injection, as well as wastewater treatment and by-product rendering, enabling processors to manage environmental and waste challenges more efficiently while recovering valuable by-products. The company also expanded into further processing systems, along with essential technologies such as sterilisation and pasteurisation.

Milestones in Integrated Solutions

As customers’ processing requirements grew in complexity, DFS shifted from supplying individual machines to delivering complete, integrated plants.

Two key milestones defined this era:

2005: A significant step in this journey was the commissioning a complete separated poultry meal rendering plant in the Western Cape. This project introduced specialised separation and waste handling systems to the local market, helping processors turn waste streams into useful resources.

2012: DFS completed its first turnkey primary poultry processing plant in Namibia. This project was a practical demonstration of the company’s ability to manage large-scale, integrated installations and proved its capability to support processors across the greater Southern African region.

A Thoughtful Succession

In 2016, the Das family handed over leadership to a hand-picked executive team. Alongside this transition, DAS Food Systems became DFS Process Solutions – a name aligned with the company’s evolution into a broader engineering solutions provider, while preserving the practical, solutions-driven ethos that has defined the business since its founding.
